Mildura region economy to benefit
from solar project - 25 October, 2006
The Federal and State governments today announced a $125 million
grant to Solar Systems Pty Ltd for development of their $420
million solar power project which is likely to be located in
the Mildura region.
Solar Systems will meet with the Sunraysia
Mallee Economic Development Board, Mildura Rural City Council
and other relevant bodies to further discuss potential locations
for what is to be the biggest and most efficient solar photovoltaic
power station in the world.
Solar Systems’ Sustainability
Manager, Julia Birch says “Of the total project cost, 10%
will be spent on direct labour including local labour contractors
and skilled engineers in the Mildura region.”
An assembly
plant is also earmarked for North West Victoria which will create
jobs as part of a longer term solar power project. The Solar
Systems project is expected to create up to 950 new jobs in Australia.
Chairman of Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board, John
Irwin, says “The Solar Systems power station is exciting
news for the region with the introduction of new jobs, world
leading technology and environmental benefits.
These factors
underpin the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board’s
Strategic Plan for a diverse and sustainable economic future.”
This
project enhances the Mildura region’s environmental profile, “clean
and green” image and will see one of Australia’s
newest industries take advantage of our region’s natural
resources. |
